When I lived in Woonsockett, Rhode Island (I was commuting to my work in Milford, Massachusetts) we lived in a converted catholic school.
The diocese had fallen on hard times and had renovated the Catholic school into apartments. And we lived in one on the third floor of the side building.
The owner of the apartment building was an immigrant from India and did not believe in ventilation. So the building was HOT.
He also didn’t believe in lighting. So, It was dark.
They didn’t believe in hallway lighting (relying on the windows at the end of the hallway for light during the day, and the streetlight outside for light at night). And without ventilation… it was stifling.

Walking up three flights of stairs was a trial.
Gasping for breath was a daily occurrence, and it really sucked. You don’t really appreciate this need for air, until you are forced to climb a hot set of stairs in a airless chimney. Ugh!
Air is important.
Ventilate. Use plants. Keep the air fresh, and for God’s sake use a fan to keep the air moving.
Just like a pool of water becomes stagnant over time, so does a windowless room. Ventilate.

What’s the most memorable interaction you had at a rest stop?
My stepdad is an auto mechanic. I recall when I was younger we were on a family road trip and saw a car broken down at a rest stop. My younger sisters and I started to tell Dad that he should go help them.
“Dad, they are broke down you should go take a look and help them out!”
My dad’s reply was something like “Eww, they drive a Dodge, I don’t like working on Dodges!”
“Dad, come on, be nice!”
I think he had already planned on going over and seeing what the problem was even though it would take more time away from our trip.
He went over and helped out this couple which were a little older. He explained to them that he was an auto mechanic and asked them to go through the “try to start it, I want to hear what sound it makes” diagnostic process. Finally Dad gave them the diagnosis and told them what they could do to fix it temporarily and then explained they should see a mechanic once they get to their destination to get it fixed more permanently. (Please do not ask me what was wrong. I was a teen and did not care to remember back then let alone now.)
The couple were so grateful to my stepdad that they tried to offer him money. He said no. He explained to them that he believed in helping others out and hoped that should something ever happen to his daughters (pointing in our direction) someday someone else would be nice enough to help us similarly.
The lady was so overcome with gratitude that she phoned his work once they had arrived at their destination and gotten their vehicle repaired to let his boss know that my dad had gone out of his way while on vacation with his family to assist some strangers who were broken down. She explained to Dad’s boss that he would not even accept money for his good deeds and she felt that his boss should know that he did a superb job in hiring such a great guy!
Dad came home after work to tell us all about how his boss told him that he was a good representative of where he worked because now these people that live in a totally different state knew about the car dealership and had positive reviews of at least one person in the service department! Dad even got put up for a bonus because of the glowing review while he was off-duty. He couldn’t have been more thrilled that helping someone during his off time ended up helping him at work as well.
What are the most arrogant, idiotic and shameful things a politician has ever said?
I’m from Vietnam and there is no shortage of idiotic and shameful things said by politicians here. Below are some of the more notable ones:
- “We used to teach one class with 40 students. Not anymore. Now we teach 40 students in one class”, Minister of Education and Training, 2015.
- “Defense attorneys should have the legal obligation to denounce their clients if they know for sure their clients are guilty. Failing to do so should be a criminal offense” – Chairwoman of the National Assembly, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, May 2017 (the National Assembly in Vietnam is like the Parliament in the UK or Congress in the US)
- “The National Assembly is elected by the people. If the National Assembly do something wrong, the people are responsible, there is no one else to punish” – Chairman of the National Assembly, Nguyen Sinh Hung, 2014.
- “If my children have measles, I will never send them here [National Hospital for Children]”, Minister of Health, Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, 2014. Well of course not, you will order the doctors to bring their equipment and medicines to your mansion. Or you will send your children to the best, most expensive hospital abroad using the corruption money that you have amassed over the years.
- “Poisoned potatoes imported from China are … still safe” – Head of the Plant Protection Department, 2014
- “Fighting corruption is difficult because we have to fight ourselves” – General Secretary of the Communist Party, Nguyen Phu Trong, 2015.
- “Half of the bridge collapsed to the river, the remaining half is still perfectly functional”, Deputy Director of a provincial Transport Department, 2015.
What is even more breathtaking than the statement itself is the fact that the bridge collapsed after just 2 weeks of operating. One can’t help but question: How much money did this guy embezzle from the project?

9. “I had to work as a motorbike taxi driver for many many nights to save enough money to build this villa”, Deputy Head of a provincial Internal Affairs committee, 2017.

Potato Hash with Eggs and Mushrooms
A portabella mushroom blends seamlessly with the Italian sausage, while the peppers add color to Potato Hash with Eggs and Mushrooms. Perfect for an everyday breakfast or weekend brunch.
Prep: 10 min | Cook: 15 min | Yield: 4 servings
Ingredients
- 1 large fresh portabella mushroom
- 1 tablespoon (15 mL) olive oil
- 3 mild Italian sausages, removed from casing and crumbled
- 1/2 small red onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 2 large russet potatoes, peeled, diced
- 1/4 green bell pepper, diced
- 1/4 red bell pepper, diced
- Salt and pepper
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) shredded Cheddar cheese
- 4 large eggs
- Chopped parsley
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F/175 degrees C.
- Place portabella mushroom in a food processor fitted with a metal blade. Pulse until finely chopped.
- In a large nonstick, oven-safe skillet heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped mushrooms, Italian sausage, onion and garlic. Use spatula to break up sausage into tiny pieces.
- Once cooked, remove from pan and set aside. Leave any fat renderings in pan.
- Heat pan with the sausage renderings over medium heat. Add diced potatoes. Allow to cook for 10-15 minutes until softened.
- Add diced peppers and increase to medium-high heat, continue to cook until potatoes are crispy, about 10 minutes.
- Add sausage back to pan; cook for another 2 to 3 minutes before stirring.
- Sprinkle with cheese.
- Crack eggs in each quadrant of the pan.
- Season with salt and pepper.
- Place skillet in oven and bake for 20 minutes, until eggs are set.
- Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

I. Forcing China to Innovate
In 2014 , China imported every chip made with 28 nm process or lower and 70% of the Chips made with the 45 nm process
The Chips were made in Taiwan and Korea, designed by the US and made by Dutch machines
China was utterly dependent on these nations for the chips and these nations were dependent on China for the consumer goods made using these Chips
In 2018, Dumbo Trump began to restrict the flow of Chips to Huawei and began the entities blacklist
He began the tariffs due to which to lower their costs, China began to start their own supply Chain
Fast forward to 2024
China makes 54% of its own 28 nm process chips (from 0% in 2014) and makes the entire indigenous equipment to make the 28 nm process commercially
China makes 69% of its own 45 nm process chips at a mere 32% cost
It’s ready to make fully indigenous 14 nm Chips and just made a 7 nm Chip with DUV technology that performs very well
Thus thanks to US stupidity – China managed to go from full importer of 14 nm, 28 nm Chips and 70% 45 nm Chips in 2014 to net exporter of 45 nm Chips and above plus develop fully Indigenous machinery for 14 nm Chips and make 7 nm Chips indigenously in a mere decade
Without US Push, Chinese Entities would simply have not been inclined to invest in Chipmaking as the Imports would have been higher yield at more efficient costs in the early years
II. Decoupling
In 2018, China used the USD for 94.6% of its Trade and settled in USD with 132 out of 143 BRI Nations
China used SWIFT for 99.3% of its transactions in USD
US had leverage control on China and China was utterly dependent on the Western financial system
Then US began to talk of decoupling and derisking and freeze others funds and steal Afghan money
Fast forward
China uses USD to settle only 57.5% of its trade using Local Swaps to settle 26% of its trade and the RMB and Ruble to settle 16% of its Trade
China uses CIPS and other systems now with Iran and Russia and Cuba and Venezuela
Thus again China is no longer entirely dependent on the Western System
III. Anti China Rhetoric
Mainlander Residents made up 27.7% of all Researchers in the USA in 2018. The Highest among foreign researchers
60% of all researchers in Critical Technology research were Chinese, bulk of them from the Mainland
They did a lot of path breaking innovation
Then you had gutter scum like De Santis and Cotton who began Anti China Rhetoric
So Chinese brains decided to stay back home and not go to the US while Chinese Scientists and Researchers decided to go back home to China than be insulted and treated with suspicion in US
From 2023- almost 548 researchers including 107 with Tenure left US and moved back to China
Plus nearly 10,300 Doctorate Students from China stayed home rather than going to the US and innovating for them
They help China innovate instead of USA
Accelerating Chinas progress in those areas
US is unable to fill the gap with others
Korea, Taiwan and Japan combined send maybe 1600 researchers a year
Indians send barely 60 researchers a year in critical technologies
So in each case China adapted but it was US who started it all
When you have Idiots chosen by a corrupted form of democracy – they are no match for the High range meritocracy of China
What are some most important unspoken rules in life?
- Don’t ask for something if the person only has one of it left — gum, candy, or a piece of cake.
- If you used all the toilet paper, you go refill it.
- Buy a plunger before you need a plunger.
- Do not swipe left or right if someone shows a picture on their phone.
- Pee first. No matter what you’re doing, pee first.
- If you borrow someone’s car, fill up the tank before you return it.
- Leave it in a better condition than you found it.
- When out to dinner with a group, only the person who ordered the least expensive meal/combo of things can offer to split the check evenly.

- Please don´t start drama at a funeral.

- If you are borrowing it for the third time, you need one of it of your own.
- If you cancel on a friend, it’s your responsibility to reschedule.

We need to do better
Anyone who has been on an airplane that had to make an emergency landing, what happened, and what was it like in the cabin?
I was flying as a passenger in a small two-engine commuter plane, with a single row of seat on each side and an aisle in the middle. We were going from DC to Lynchburg, Virginia. On the way there, I suddenly heard a loud BANG and saw smoke emitting from the engine on the right, then the propellor came to a complete stop. I could smell burning oil. From that and the sound, I surmised something important was clearly broken, and that engine would not be restarting until it was repaired. Too late for us.
Not long after, the pilot came on the intercom. I’ll never forget his first words. “If we get down…” Then a pause followed by, “When we get down…” and the rest of what he said, which was that we would be diverting to a closer airport (Charlottesville) and probably more things that I can’t remember.
There was a little nervous laughter from someone, while another passenger started crying. The person who had smiled and laughed stopped smiling and began to look tense.
I felt our chances were good. Whatever happened to the engine that failed was unlikely to affect the other still-running engine. This was a better problem to have that trouble with the landing gear or control surfaces, for instance.
As we approached Charlottesville airport, I could see clearly through to the cockpit and what was ahead. The landing strip was getting larger and larger. A welcome sight. We were, however, approaching at a bit of angle. The side with the working engine was noticeably more ahead and forward than the other side. It was pulling the plane askew. I wondered how we would land like that.
I don’t remember anyone asking us to brace for a landing, which seems odd in retrospect.
As we touched down, fire engines were racing alongside.
We made it.
I rode back to the terminal in one of the fire engines. Later, someone from the airline directed us to an area to wait together until they made arrangements to continue our journeys. It was taking a long time, and one of us complained about the delay. Someone else, quoting a friend who was a pilot, answered, “In aviation, it’s better to have the delays and trouble when you’re still on the ground than later.” No one countered that view.
Some years ago, I had the opportunity to ask a pilot about landing on one engine when the aircraft is askew. He told me that you give it a little rudder to straighten out at the last instance just as the wheels are about to touch the ground, but not so soon that the aircraft has time to swing back. That sounded to me like a high degree of finesse would be needed, so we must have had good pilots that day. Thanks to them, I’m still here.

How do you tell someone their name is wrong?
My elderly uncle, 85, had a run in with an absolute Peach of a teacher in 3rd grade. She’d been a mid-year sub (because married teachers weren’t allowed to teach while pregnant *huge eye roll*) and announced to the class that she didn’t allow nick names and told everyone what their proper names were and she would ONLY call them by their ‘proper’ names.
This caused an uproar as this was in the heart of Texas. Lots of Bubbas, Sissys, Juniors, etc. She told my uncle his name was James. He refused to answer to this as his name was, in fact, NOT James. Yelling ensued, mostly her at him and then she yanked him out of his chair and dragged him to the office. This teacher did not understand that you didn’t call my grandmother down to the school unless someone was dying.
My grandmother arrived as the teacher was explaining to the principal about my uncle’s “disrespect and obstinate attitude”. With a rare show of patience, my grandmother waited until the new teacher was done hammering that nail into her coffin before addressing the principal. “Why did I have to come down here?”
The principal stammered, attempting to have the teacher’s back but his expression showed he knew it was futile. The teacher puffed up and condescendingly explained her policy on names and that her son refused to obey. My grandmother asked, “And what name do you think he should answer to?”
“James, of course.”
“His NAME is NOT James, It’s Jimmy. I include his middle name when he’s in trouble.”
“That’s ridiculous. Jimmy is a diminutive of James. Therefore, his names is JAMES.”
My uncle piped up, “She made Sissy and Junior cry.” Everyone knew Sissy’s given name but her little sister couldn’t say it and she’d gone by Sissy her whole life. Junior was self explanatory.
My grandmother stood up and leaned in toward the teacher, “My son’s name is Jimmy. I know this as fact since I Named Him. His birth certificate says Jimmy. His enrollment paperwork says Jimmy.” My grandmother turned to the principal, “Do I need to make a call to Mr. Jensen?” The principal turned white. My grandparents were good friends with both the ISD superintendent and the mayor and there had already been an issue with a different teacher stepping over a parental boundary.
My grandmother refused to allow any kind of punishment and my uncle said the new teacher wasn’t there the next school day.
How can having all the money in the world lead someone to be disillusioned with their life?
It depends on the wealth and how they got it.
If they earned it themselves then no as they have to struggle to get it.
It’s their children who are born into it and do not struggle. Hence wealth lasts only 3 generations. I mean Li Ka Shing richest man in HK (who is actually Canadian) his son never went through his dad’s struggles and is far less of a business man than his dad. Though he’s doomed anyway as his company is just a rent seeking company and PRC China doesn’t like that.
So when everything is within reach, then there’s nothing worth reaching for.
Older people may remember a television series called Made In Chelsea. I literally know several of these rich kids from the first series. Well knew as they probably have forgotten me.
They had flashy cars, they went on holidays and flew first class.
But they never knew struggles of others and they were very shallow as they had no real character. It didn’t matter if they failed something as money would immediately fix it. So they didn’t even have to try all that hard either.
I’m not saying it’s not a good situation to be in though.
What was totally acceptable in high school 50 years ago that isn’t today?
Once I was doing some gardening work for a former neighbour. Just to get some more money in my pocket. I was riding in his work vehicle and talking to him. Like all adults inevitably do, he asked me about school.
I didn’t want to talk about school, so I tried to redirect the conversation to his experiences at school when he was younger.
Before I knew it, I had him telling me about his experiences attending an all-boys boarding school in the 1990s. It was about as violent as you’d expect, but out of nowhere he said something that completely shocked me.
“Oh yeah, and if you started the fight they’d beat you with the cane” “WHAT?!?!?!”
Only in non-government schools, but holy heck.
In my mind, students being caned is something that only ever happened in reruns of Little House on the Prairie I watched as a kid. Or something that happened at home when you’d been especially bad.
But nope. In the ‘90s, my neighbour and his classmates were caned for a variety of offenses, including smoking, streaking, fighting, leaving campus, etc.
You needed your parents’ permission for teachers to be allowed to cane you, but many disciplinarian parents gladly let their kids have it. In fact, the Australian state of Queensland (where my former neighbour went to school) still allows students to be caned as punishment.
“The school, which has 600 students in Prep to Year 12, gave the paddle 10 times last year and seven times in 2007, he said. "I would never use the paddle unless we have spoken to both parents and have their blessing for it to be used," Mr Bensley said. "It is always administered in a loving way. In fact, we pray with them afterwards."
I’ve gone to several Catholic schools in Australia, albeit in other states, and I never saw anything like this.
In all my time at Catholic schools, the only shit-kickings I ever got were from my fellow students. In fact, teachers at my school weren’t even allowed to touch students beyond absolute necessity.
It’s crazy to think that not only was this present in the 1990s, it’s still present now. Not just in Australia, but all over the world.

Have you ever ignored a blaring red flag because someone was insanely good looking?
He was tall, dark, and handsome, and insanely good looking… Until he opened his mouth.
He had walked into my English class in my sophomore year and all the girls watched as he took a seat.
Girls were drawn to him and he never lacked for companions who wanted to chat with him.
But he dripped with conceit.
When he spoke, it was apparent that he was interested in one topic only — himself. The world, for him, revolved around him.
The more I got to know him, the uglier he looked to me. By the end of the year, I couldn’t believe I ever found him attractive.
When I was much younger, I did forgive character flaws because someone was insanely good looking. But I came to understand that some of those insanely good looking people weren’t very nice.
Some were selfish, obnoxious, bullies.
Over time, I realized that people are sometimes like deceptively wrapped presents.
Sometimes you unwrap a beautiful present with shimmering paper and a fancy bow to find nothing but a piece of poop inside.
Other times you open up a present wrapped in plain brown paper to discover a diamond.
Insanely good looking people are good for catching my eyes for only that very first time I meet them.
But after that, whether they are good looking or not depends on their personality.
If they have an intriguing mind and a beautiful heart, I find the person insanely attractive regardless of their outer appearance.
What is one thing that I can learn from you today?
Do you know why a manhole is circular in shape?
This was the question asked to me in my internship interview. I did not know the answer to this question but thought to give it an attempt. I gave multiple reasons –
- It would be easy to clean as there will be no corners where the dirt can accumulate
- It must be to ensure the safety of the person going inside the manhole. If the manhole is rectangular or square shaped then there are chances that the person will hurt himself with the sharp corners of the manhole
The above reasons are okay but not the prime reasons for a circular design. The main reason is –
The diagonal length is the largest dimension in a rectangle or a square. A rectangular or a square shaped manhole would have a same shape cover as well. This means the length or breadth dimension of that cover could be accommodated easily in the diagonal of that manhole and this is how the cover would fall inside the manhole.
To avoid this unwanted fall, manholes are designed circular in shape.

We, South Koreans, really hate our politicians.
But out of all the politicians we hate, the most hated politician of the modern era has to be Park Geun-hye – Wikipedia, the previous president of South Korea.
Her, when she could still smile.
I say “previous” because she got impeached and jailed after the largest political scandal (and the largest protest that followed) in the history of Korea happened, her approval rating dropped to 5%, and still said some really stupid things while all that happened.
Her, after we brought her to the Supreme Court and was found guilty.
I haven’t seen a chart so satisfying since the chart of South Sea Company stock prices.
Some people were so pissed off to literally make a list of the most arrogant, idiotic, shameful things she has said in the most popular public wiki in Korea. Here are some of the gems I found:
“Is this A.I?”
After seeing a pair shoes with smart sensors.
“Powder made out of Korean chili pepper….this must be extraordinarily valuable.”
After seeing Chilli Powder in a marketplace. Of course, this is untrue and very stupid and awkward at the same time.
“Sleep is the best.”
After an authority of a religion said to her sarcastically “You seem to sleep well nowadays.”This is during the times the protests were happening and Park decided to isolate herself to ignore the protests.
“What did I even do wrong?”
After asked to resign from office. This was after the Korean Intelligence already uncovered so much evidence of her corruption, that it was literally impossible to deny it.

I was facepalming… I mean great defence of daddy but I need to teach this kid how to be more sensitive!

- Gently fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
- Bake on a hot griddle, turn only once when bubbles on the surface break.
