Before the battle, the people in the community lived long and healthy lives. After the war, the quality of life was substantially reduced. The survivors were at a disadvanced and diseases, illness and over all family care suffered. This lasted for decades afterwards. Do not expect that your level of civilization is stable enough to withstand a war or major conflict.
Know your history. All you need to do is to go to some historical digs and see what the bones can tell us. The past is frightening and it would very well happen again.
