SHTF Comms Contingency
Quote from daegonmagus on September 29, 2021, 2:32 pmSomething has been bugging for sometime. Given the way the world is fast sliding off it's axis into the seemingly big shit heap, it has got me wondering about staying in contact with others that are a part of the great awakening/ great prison escape, whatever you want to call it. Like MM I get these nagging feelings. One I have had since I was little is that I am going to experience some sort of bad SHTF situation, even though I don't know exactly what it is (though i suppose thermonuclear warfare). Since I started talking about my experiences in LD, I have been getting another one of these nagging thoughts that just doesn't go away, and that is that some sort of backup comms network needs to be in place for "non physical plane operators" to communicate should all the major infrastructure go down. I have been thinking of the best way to do this - I even opened up a fb group to try and establish it with preppers over here, but none of them seemed that enthusiastic about doing all the theory because radio propegation theory is pretty full on. The problem is though, you need to have a small amount of theory behind you to be able to properly set up for emm comms; radio just isn't one of those things you can just "pick up and use straight out of the bag" - atleast not HF/ long distance radio. So, I figured i'd post the idea here, seeing that MM seems to have a readership reaching multiple countries.
The idea is this:
Have a liason in as many countries as possible that doesn't necessarily have to learn radio theory, but atleast is willing to either invest in some radio apparatus, join a local ham group to learn more about it or even just keep an eye out for a potential ham operator they can hit up in a proper SHTF situation; the ham operator would need to be somewhat reliable and be on the lower HF bands quite often. By having some prearranged "codes" we could effectively have the ham operators put out a call for other potential participants in this whole earth prison break saga. They might not necessarily understand what the hell it is they are broadcasting/ keeping an ear out for, but they could potentially be used to open up a channel to keep us all coordinated and focused on the same goal, just like this site is doing. It would work like this; nukes start flying and all of sudden the entire comms grid goes dark seemingly overnight. You know the guy down the street has a big 80m antenna tower sticking out of the ground in his front yard, so you assume maybe he is into HAM radio. You go and ask him and sure enough old Bob says he's set up to talk his mate Jeff on the otherside of the world every Friday (in reality you probably won't have a set time). Turns out he has about a $20k worth of equipment which includes 1.5kW radio amplifier and could talk to someone on Jupiter if he wanted to. You then ask Bob if he minds keep an ear out on a certain HF channel - maybe 7 or 3.5Mhz for a certain code making its rounds. The code Bob is looking for is PurpleMonkeyDishwasher and if he hear's it to respond with "I like frozen banana's" or something - i'm sure we can iron out those details later. Bob will then be given an alternate frequency by Mr PurpleMonkeyDishwasher and a time of contact. This will act as the global "group contact" which will be coordinated to pass radio traffic to the other countries liasons. Bob agrees, on the condition you give him can of baked beans for his troubles.
Alternatively you already have a little bit of equipment of your own. maybe an HF rig, a roll of wire and an antenner tuner, but you've got no real idea on how to use it. You approach Bob and he agrees to give you a rundown....for a can of baked beans.
Or if you've joined a HAM club maybe you already know Bob and have built up a good friendship with him. He not only gives you a rundown but offers to set the whole portable system for you. This time Bob waives the whole baked bean can fee altogether.
I guess I am looking at this from the perspective of "how the fuck will I be able to get my daily MM fix of non CIA manipulated news if the entire grid goes down?" - ham radio seems like the obvious choice to piggy back off. I understand there are other emergency radio organisations, like WICEN here in Aus, but from what I have read on them they seem to have a reliance on government funded emergency services to eventually come and collect you/provide you with whatever it is you need; this will be more for a "fringe information" sharing type gig.
Thoughts appreciated. Pleas efeel free to tell me you think I am jumping the gun here

Quote from pissedlizard on September 30, 2021, 6:37 am@DM When I was still teaching I bought all the printer inks and shit with my own money. About 2 weeks before I left I got a serious urge to print off all the old MM articles - because SOMEONE needs to pass this along in the states when we all can’t connect.
It took the full 2 weeks to print everything and I went through 5 reams of paper - and that’s with the settings on the printer to print JUST the article pages, not all the pages with the links. And it was before the new way of printing things - but yeah. I wondered the same thing months ago... what happens when I need my fix?

Quote from daegonmagus on September 30, 2021, 7:31 am@Perolator I Agree, but it I also believe it to be the most realistic way of keeping people in contact without them having to spend any money. Thanks to hams, radio infrastructure is everywhere. I have been looking at things like meshtastic which is like a mobile phone system that uses point to point contact to send messages ratehrt han relyign on telco company infrastructure, but they require lots of people jumping on the band wagon to be effective, and as they still seem to be in their primitive stages regarding membership, it seems like it will be awhile before this is even really usable. Plus I don't think are usable for intercontinental comms. If the idea is seeded to enough people prior to a SHTF event, then they can atleast be on the lookout for said infrastructure in the event their survival needs are met

Quote from daegonmagus on October 1, 2021, 8:54 amAnyone interested in survival comms should grab a copy of the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Handbook. it is considered the radio "bible" amongst Hams and will take you through the basics all the way up to advanced theory.
